PLAINFIELD, Connecticut – Plainfield First Selectman Kevin Cunningham held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Amazon delivery station on Tuesday, July 20, 2021. Selectman Cunningham stated “The Town of Plainfield is extremely excited for the opportunity to partner with Amazon in the construction of a “last mile” facility in our Town. This project will lead to substantial direct and indirect economic growth within the community.”

The new 202,000-square-foot facility will be located at 137 Lathrop Road, formerly the location of a popular dog racing track that closed in 2005. After the property stood vacant for nearly 16 years, in March, site plans for a “last mile” facility were approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission.  As a “last mile” facility, large shipments of packages from 18-wheelers will be received overnight and smaller delivery vans will distribute packages to customers during the day. This facility will service customers within a 45-minute radius of Plainfield.

“Plans for this facility will directly create more than 100 Amazon associate jobs and hundreds of contracted driver opportunities in Plainfield,” stated Cunningham.  “These jobs will give locals the opportunity to access full-time work that pays at least $15 an hour.”  He also notes that the new facility will positively impact other local businesses by increasing their customer base and providing residents with more money to spend at their businesses. “When people make more money, they spend more money.  This is great for the local economy” stated Cunningham.

Additionally, the Town of Plainfield is currently in the process of selling two industrial park lots on East Parkway to a developer.  “These new businesses will create even more jobs and further benefit the local economy” stated Cunningham “The economic benefits of these projects are limitless.”

Construction of the facility began immediately following the groundbreaking ceremony and is scheduled for a spring completion date. The Town will work with Amazon to host a hiring event sometime during the upcoming spring.
