***Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are asking anyone who wishes to obtain a marriage license to fill out the marriage worksheet in its entirety prior to arrival at the town hall.

Obtaining a Marriage License for Marriages taking place in the Town of Plainfield

  • The license must be obtained in the town the ceremony will take place;
  • The application process will take some time to complete, plan to arrive no later than 45 minutes before the office closes; (new guidelines – fill out prior to arrival)
  • Both parties must appear together, in person, to make application. Driver’s license or other valid photo identification is required;
  • Know which state each of you was born in;
  • Know each of your mothers’ full maiden names;
  • Know where each of your respective parents were born (state or foreign country);
  • Know your social security numbers;
  • Provide the date the ceremony will be performed;
  • Provide the name of the person officiating and their address and phone number (JP List below);
  • The marriage license is good for only 65 days from the time of issuance; (new guidelines – the marriage license is good for 125 days from time of issuance)
  • The license fee is $50 payable in cash or certified bank check.

  • Call ahead to confirm that we have your license on file in this office at 860-230-3009
  • The fee is $20 for each certified copy of your marriage license payable by check or money order made out to Town of Plainfield
  • By mail – See the form above for instructions
  • In person – You’ll need to provide a photo ID and date of marriage.  Payable with cash, check or money order.  (in-person requests for records are suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic)
